In 1971, an unlikely meeting between two athletes would lead to the first U.S delegation to enter China in decades. Dubbed “Ping Pong Diplomacy,” this event opened the gate for diplomatic steps between President Nixon and Chairman Mao Zedong, resulting in stronger U.S.- China relations.​​​​​​​
